What is sewer pipe relining?

Sewer pipe relining is a trenchless method of repairing your underground sewer line from the inside. A flexible structural liner is inserted through an existing access point, positioned over the damaged section, then inflated and cured to form a new pipe within the old one.

The finished liner is structurally stronger than the original pipe, completely seals cracks and root entry points, and carries a 50-year written warranty. Your garden, driveway, tiles and concrete stay intact.

  • No digging, no excavation, no mess
  • Seals cracks, root entry and joint displacement permanently
  • Works on clay, PVC, cast iron and concrete sewer pipes
  • 50-year written warranty on all sewer relining work
  • Usually completed in a single day

Sewer pipe before and after relining

Tree roots and cracked joints are the most common cause of sewer pipe failure in Sydney. Relining permanently stops both.

Sewer pipe with tree root intrusion before relining

Before

Tree root intrusion and cracked joint

Roots enter through cracked or displaced joints, causing recurring blockages and structural damage.

Sewer pipe after relining — smooth new liner installed

After

Smooth structural liner, roots locked out

The cured liner forms a new pipe inside the old one. No root re-entry, no cracks, backed by 50-year warranty.

Common sewer pipe problems in Sydney

Most Sydney sewer failures fall into one of these six categories. All can be repaired without excavation.

Tree root intrusion

The most common cause of sewer failure in Sydney. Roots seek moisture, enter through cracked joints, and grow to block the line entirely. Relining permanently seals entry points so roots cannot re-enter.

Cracked or fractured sewer pipe

Old clay sewer pipes common in inner-Sydney suburbs are prone to cracking as soil shifts. A structural liner restores full flow capacity and prevents soil ingress without any digging.

Displaced or offset joints

Ground movement, age, and poor original installation cause joints to shift out of alignment. CCTV confirms the location; relining bridges the displaced joint and seals it permanently.

Recurring blockages

If your sewer blocks every 6 to 12 months, the pipe almost certainly has structural damage allowing root re-entry. A drain clean provides short-term relief; relining is the permanent answer.

Old clay sewer pipes

Many Sydney properties still have original clay or earthenware sewer lines. These are prone to root intrusion and cracking but are excellent candidates for relining as the liner bonds tightly to the clay surface.

Pre-purchase sewer inspection

Sewer defects rarely show up in a standard building inspection. A CCTV sewer inspection before purchase reveals root intrusion, cracks and joint displacement, and the cost to fix them.

Private sewer vs Sydney Water: who is responsible?

A common source of confusion for Sydney homeowners is understanding where your responsibility ends and Sydney Water’s begins. The sewer system on your property has two distinct parts.

Your private sewer runs from your home’s fixtures (toilets, showers, sinks) to the connection point at the boundary of your property, or in some cases to the main sewer in the street. You are responsible for maintaining this section.

Sydney Water’s infrastructure covers the shared sewer main in the street and the connection from your boundary to that main. Faults in this section are Sydney Water’s responsibility to repair.

A CCTV sewer inspection identifies exactly where a defect is located, so you know whether the repair is your obligation or Sydney Water’s before spending a dollar.

How sewer relining works

Four steps from inspection to a relined sewer, usually completed within a single day.

01

Free CCTV sewer inspection

A drain camera inspects the full sewer line, locating cracks, root intrusion, displaced joints and collapsed sections. You receive a recorded report of findings.

02

High-pressure root clearing

Where root intrusion is present, 5,000 PSI water jetting clears the sewer and prepares the pipe wall for the liner. Roots are flushed out completely.

03

Liner installation and curing

The Nuflow liner is inserted through an existing access point, positioned precisely over the repair zone, then cured with UV light or steam to form the new structural pipe.

04

Post-install inspection and handover

A final CCTV pass confirms the liner is seated correctly, junctions are reinstated, and flow is fully restored. You receive a warranty document and inspection footage.

Sewer relining FAQs

How much does sewer relining cost in Sydney?

Sewer relining costs depend on pipe length, diameter, number of junctions and access conditions. A short residential repair typically starts from around $2,500. See our detailed pipe relining cost guide for scenario-based estimates and an interactive calculator.

How long does sewer relining last?

The Nuflow liner system is rated for up to 100 years of service. All Maida sewer relining work carries a 50-year written warranty.

Can my sewer pipe be relined without digging up my garden?

Yes. The liner is inserted through an existing inspection opening or a small access point we create. Your garden, driveway, tiles and concrete stay completely intact.

What types of sewer pipe can be relined?

We reline clay, earthenware, PVC, cast iron, concrete and fibre cement sewer pipes. Clay sewer pipes common in older Sydney suburbs are particularly well-suited to relining.

Do I need to be home during the relining?

Someone needs to provide access to the property. Most residential sewer relining jobs are completed within one day. We keep water use to a minimum and restore your sewer to full service before leaving.

What if only part of my sewer pipe is damaged?

We can reline a short section (patch relining) or the full pipe run. The CCTV inspection confirms the exact location and extent of damage so only the affected section needs to be addressed.
